Nice but Poor
This ditty actually got to the final of 'Write a Song for Lincolnshire' as did the other songs I have submitted; 'The Lincoln Imp' and 'From the Mountains'. None of them won. Being well loved by a nice but poor Lincolnshire man is not enough. Strangely, it ends happily.
Nice but Poor
Well I met my love in old Skegness
And he said 'all I want
Is your happiness'.
But I thought I'd be happier
If I saw him less
And my heart wasn't willing
To be in the hands
Of a nice but poor
Young Lincolnshire man.

And I met my love by the 10ft drain,
And he said 'if you loved me
You'd not cause me pain,
The world must see we're
Sweethearts again,
But my heart wasn't willing
To be in the hands
Of a nice but poor
Young Lincolnshire man.

So I met my love in the
Church on the Wolds
But I left when he got to
'To have and to hold'
For I just couldn't see
Together grown old...
For my heart wasn't willing
To be in the hands
Of a nice but poor
Young Lincolnshire man.

Then I met my love by his
Aunt's graveside
And she'd left her wealth to
Him when she died...
And I'll love my love
And I'll stay by his side
For my heart is SO willing
To be in the hands
Of this nice AND RICH
Young Lincolnshire man.
