I'm not a keen walker, but I know a man who is. I was trying to put myself into his shoes, to feel what he feels when he's out on the hills. He says it comes close.
Walking with the Wind
I breathe again in hill-top air
My soul and spirit are laid bare
I am a different person there
I'm walking with the wind
Treading paths that tie the mountain down
But lift up those who walk them round
With the God of sky and earth I'm found,
Walking with the wind
And my heart says to me
Be done with insincerity
Out on the hills you're free
Go walking with the wind and know
The open country is your home
The open country is your home
From the chains of society
I pray Good Lord, deliver me
I seek the peace of scarp and scree
And walking with the wind
The moors my silver, the peaks my gold
My treasure's where my heart and soul
Delight in wildness, and are made whole
I'm walking with the wind
And my heart...
Well I am here, and, truth to tell,
I've found myself, and all is well
'Twixt earth and heaven upon the hills
I'm walking with the wind.
I heed not life's dark whispering
I hear the rocks and the mountains sing
Creation's story - and I join in
I'm walking with the wind
And my heart...
And I'll return when my days are done -
Remember this when I am gone...
I've always known where I belong
I'm walking with the wind
And my heart...
