River of Heaven
A short song I wrote when I was having a health crisis and thought - 'I'd better write something they can play at my funeral...' It's about faith, hope and the metaphor of the underground river of the Spirit which flows through life, and we put down roots into. It was played on Radio 4's Advent Meditations one year!
River of Heaven
Put your roots down into heaven's great stream
Flowing underground through life and unseen.
May the kingdom rise up within you; fill you, give you
Life in all its fullness and liberty.
Draw the strength you need for times to come
God's love made real in our healed humanity.

Wash your eyes and see how this world is blessed;
All the earth is filled with God's holiness;.
Seas and mountains, all the horizons lift their voices,
Joining heaven's hymn to the Lord of Hosts.
Sing with joy, we were created for his pleasure;
Children made not of clay but stardust.

From the river of salvation you draw
Living water and be thirsty no more.
Let the current take you, enfold you, bear you on its wave
And onward till you reach heaven's far shore.
Where there is no sorrow, no more dying,
Coming home, we're coming home for evermore.
